B4 (definition) What is a student?
Most probably, even just for once in your life you have been called a student, but do you deserve to be called as such? Straight from the dictionary, a student is a person following a formal course of study, especially in further education, and a person with informed interest in a subject. The word came from studere the Latin term that means “to be zealous”.
From the word’s etymology, I can say that a student is someone not necessarily enrolled in an academic institution who has the will to learn and the desire for knowledge. He must not be forced to wake up every morning or be caught giving up on his studies. It is for the reason that a student must have a purpose for learning. Whether it be for self-gratification, dreams or just plain passion for the field, a real student has the drive to carry on everyday.
This optimistic view of one’s studies may die down after encountering certain trials and failing them, but a real student has enough fire in his heart to not stop. It is by this will, by this yearning that a student reaches the goal he, at first, started with.
Mark Twain, the great man that he is, once said, “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education”. From this wonderful quote, I must say that a student need not be part of an academic institution. Actually, a student is someone who can learn, even from the simplest of things, the wisdom every person must aim for.
Yes, every person’s goal must be to gain wisdom he encounters in the span of his lifetime. Yes, every person must cross that thin line that distinguishes a real learner from some random person who enrolled in a school. Yes, every person must be a student.
