fuglier and fuglier each time i write.

like this essay right here.

May 20, 1991 and July 3, 2007 are 16 years, 5884 days and 4 presidents apart. Back then, Eraserheads was just starting out, the Philippines was still recovering from the chaos that followed the Marcos administration, and no one had any idea that Pinatubo was going to erupt.

Because of the turmoil brought by the several coup attempts, the Philippine economy was relatively young. Peso versus dollar as of May 20, 1991 was 27.816 pesos: a far cry from the 46.329 of today’s exchange rate. Why, that’s roughly a 70 percent increase over the course of 16 years!

What’s strange is that even if the dollar is more expensive nowadays, people still patronize imported goods. Between 1991 and 2007, people should’ve been stateside happy in the former. The contrary is happening, though. Back in 1991 the country was a major exporter of coconuts. On the other hand, we now are major importers. This, all the more makes our currency weaker.

In 1991, the country’s economy was starting on a new slate. Everyone was full of hope, striving hard to rebuild the wretched nation. Now in 2007, all have lost faith in the country. We are helpless, that’s what we believe. Let us bring back the hope and determination for a better Philippines, just like in the good ol’days.
